Demon Slayer. Kimetsu No Yaiba. WHOLESOME GREEN BOI PROTECTS CUTE PINK GIRL, is one of the best anime of all time. But what makes Demon Slayer a top contender in the industry? I’ll answer that today on 5 Elements that make Demon Slayer…PHENOMENAL

5. Compelling Story

It’s no surprise that story is a key driving force behind any creative work. And if we look at anime as a bowl of ramen, let’s pretend the noodles are the story, and the oh-so delicious toppings are the visual and audio effects, things that complement the story.

Noodles (story) and toppings (story complements)

So what’s Demon Slayer’s story? One day while Tanjiro Komado is away from home, he returns to his entire family slaughtered by demons. The only survivor is his little sister, Nezuko, who was turned into a demon. Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro’s quest to slay the Head Demon, Muzan Kibutsuji, and find a cure to turn his little sister back into a human. I don’t know how many times I said demon just now, but we’ll forgive it because Demon Slayer’s story is just that interesting. Tanjiro’s not training day in, day out to get recognition, or to be the #1 in his field, he’s doing all these things, for his sister…his sweet, innocent sister, who’s the pride of their village…I mean, LOOK AT THESE VISUALS:

4. Eyecatching Visuals

There’s a fuck ton of components that go into an anime, but I don’t think anybody would watch it if it didn’t have a unique art style, or visually interesting color palette. Demon Slayer does both of these things and more. With its use of bolding, shading, and influence from Japanese Calligraphy. WHICH BY THE WAY, the attacks used by Demon Slayers and their swords are visual metaphors for the elements they harness: Zenitsu’s fast like lightning, Inosuke’s rough like a Beast, and Tanjiro is smooth like Water.

3. Innovative CGI

With these in mind, Demon Slayer’s visuals literally pop off the screen, with help from the CGI Dynamics.

Many people lost their minds over the perfectly executed use of CGI for Demon Slayer, and they’re right to do so. The way the artists at UFOTABLE use camera Movement to emphasize over the top emotion, and subtle moments…. is freaking awesome. For most of the series, I didn’t even notice the CGI, simply because it flowed so well with the regular animation.

2. Eargasm

Besides visuals, the soundtrack and music effects are arguably the most memorable pieces to any anime. Naruto has it’s jutsu, Dragon Ball has the power up, and Boku No Pico has rough anal sex. BUT when put together with already amazing visuals, sound creates a mesmerizing combo. The way that sounds of nature complement sounds of swords, and are used to trap the audience, it keeps you engaged and fully immersed.

And with that being said, what one element could top off this list? Without this next piece, none of the previous 4 would even matter. Because where is the value behind something… without an emotional purpose?

1. Emotional weight

Demon Slayer is more than a boy slashing demons. Pain, comedy, abuse, are all showcased in this series. Each episode has these elements, whether it’s Zenitsu being comically horrified, Inosuke making us hate him when we first meet him, or arguably the most important aspect of the show, is that of Tanjiro, when he expresses empathy for the demons he meets; demons who have killed hundreds, demons who tried to harm him, and his little sister. It is these moments that make Demon Slayer a creative anime.

But to conclude, there is no one single element that makes the series (specifically the famed Episode 19) so special, it’s… all of them. Everything we’ve discussed so far is seamlessly put together, to make us feel…something, anything. Whether it’s hate for a demon, being in awe of the fantastic colors. It is with one swift blow that these aspects come together.

It reminds you why you started watching it, because when it comes down to it, it’s about a boy doing whatever he must to protect the things he loves.
